You are more than just a physical body. You have an energy body, which stores your mental, emotional, and spiritual characteristics. There are seven major energy vortexes located throughout your energy body called chakras — Root, Sacral, Solar Plexus, Heart, Throat, Third Eye, and Crown. Chakra is the Sanskrit word for "wheel," which accurately depicts the continuous rotation of the energy within these vortexes.
The chakras are nestled through the center of the body, beginning at the base of the spine and moving upwards to the crown of the head. They reside in areas that have vital organs, such as the brain, heart, and reproductive organs. Each chakra corresponds to a different physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual function, but they are interconnected to maintain the balanced flow of energy within the human anatomy. In order to vitalize the body, the chakras must work connectedly and effectively.
On a subtle level, our bodies commune with the energies around us. Certain energetic impulses will induce changes to vibrations within the chakra system. In a healthy, balanced, and aligned body, the seven chakras emit the perfect amount of energy to every part of your being. But, if there are imbalances or blockages in the chakras, the body may materialize physical, mental, and emotional disorders and distress. These energetic imbalances and blockages stem from both internal and external triggers, which cause energy to become stagnate in the body.
To have a healthy and functioning physical body, it is necessary to regulate and balance the energetic, chakra system. Energy healing modalities, like Reiki and Crystal Healing, help regulate and restore proper energy flow throughout the body. Understanding the purpose of each chakra can help you harness the personal and spiritual powers within.
Root Chakra
The root chakra is the first of the seven chakras. It is located at the lowest part of the torso, near the tailbone, and extends downward through the legs and feet. Its primary role is to connect your mind, body, and soul with the energies of Earth. The root chakra resonates with community force and has an external center of gravity. It is associated with birth, stability, security, safety, and survival. It sets the foundation for which your personal growth will expand and governs your basic needs including food and water, shelter, human connection, financial stability, nourishment, and your sense of belonging.
Sacral Chakra
The sacral chakra is the second of the seven chakras. It is located in the lower abdomen, below the navel in the hips. It is the center of emotions, desires, creativity, and pleasures. The sacral chakra creates the dynamics of our physical world. The main focus of this chakra is to allow the individual to discover their own feelings, enjoyment, hobbies, passions, intimacy, sensuality, inspirations, and expressions. Through the exploration of external relationships, activities, and experiences, you develop your own perceptions of self. This chakra is all about having the power to realize and utilize your capacity and express your individuality.
Solar Plexus Chakra
The solar plexus chakra is the third of the seven chakras. It is located in the upper abdomen, just below the rib cage. It is the source of your personal power, confidence, willpower, assertiveness, self-discipline, and power of transformation. The energy within the solar plexus chakra is the formation of the self —independent from the community and external relationships. The solar plexus will project your sense of internal power to the external world. This chakra is all about honoring yourself, forming an intuitive voice from within, developing self-esteem and self-acceptance, and activating personal growth and inner strength.
Heart Chakra
The heart chakra is the fourth of the seven chakras. It is located at the body's heart center and extends throughout the arms and hands. Once our basic survival needs are met and we develop autonomy through the lower chakras, we can begin to open ourselves up to universal love through the heart. The heart chakra is associated with love, affinity, connection, compassion, balance, breath, romance, relationships, and unity. This chakra is the mediator between body and spirit and bridges the lower, external chakras with the higher, spiritual chakras. The heart rules unconditional love and emotional power and propels us to enhance our emotional development.
Throat Chakra
The throat chakra is the fifth of the seven chakras. It is located in the throat and expands outward throughout your neck and to your shoulders. The throat is connected to the way you express yourself with utmost authenticity. It is about voicing your truths and communicating your thoughts, feelings, and intentions freely and accurately. Creation stems from the throat chakra. Every thought, word, intention, and feeling we express impact our personal realities. This chakra reminds us of the power that resides within our authentic expression. When we embody authenticity, we create alignment in our actions, experiences, and situations.
Third Eye Chakra
The third eye chakra is the sixth of the seven chakras. It is located between the brows, above the eyes, and near the top of the spine. It is the source of intuition, vision, insight, awareness, wisdom, imagination, and clairvoyance. This chakra resonates with the energy of the psyche, as well as our mental abilities and psychological tendencies. It encourages an impersonal mind to help detach from illusion. The third eye
collaborates with the rational mind to open our intuitive abilities so that we can transcend limiting thoughts, worries, and fears, and instead operate from our highest good.
Crown Chakra
The crown chakra is the last and highest of the seven chakras. It is located at the top of the head and radiates upwards towards the universe. The crown connects us to cosmic and universal energy. It is associated with higher consciousness, transcendence, meditation, divineness, and oneness. This chakra is the connector to our divine and spiritual nature. It is the entry point for life-force energy to enter into the energy system and nourish the body. It is in the crown that we begin to understand the true nature of reality.
